Google has added a filter function to its Image Search that allows you to show only images protected with a Creative Commons License.

This option is not yet available through the interface but can be used by adding one of the following parameters to the search string:

Assuming you are looking for bird images licensed under the CC Public Domain, this search string should do the job:

http://images.google.de/images?q=bird&as_rights=cc_publicdomain

For those among you who don’t know what Creative Commons is and what does each license model stands for, you might get more information under:

Happy image search

These are exciting days when it comes to the panorama of web search engines and services.

By the occasion of WolframAlpha’s birth, a computational machine accessible to everyone through the web, the online community sort of waked up a little from the lethargic world of knowledge search on the web.

I have created a new WordPress theme called Green  Thumb and am giving it away for free. It has a clean layout and uses one single sidebar on the left side.

If you like it, feel free to use it on your own blog and to spread the word (a comment with the URL of your blog using it would be nice, but not mandatory).

As many of you probably have noticed, WolframAlpha, a new web service which is trying to position itself as something between a search engine and a encyclopedia, went live this weekend.

My curiosity led me to try it out right away. Good news for the Linux people: the legendary site linux.com has been relaunched a couple of days ago.

The new site, based on the open source CMS joomla!, aims to turn into a central place for Linux lovers, Gurus, Developers, and users in general who are looking for answers, tutorials or ideas about their favourite operating system.

Anyone is invited to create an account and start his own blog, group, comments, among other collaboration features.

I wish Linux.com a long and successful future.

Thank you for visiting my personal blog.

My name is Filipe Matos, I’m portuguese and live in Germany for almost 20 years now.

As an IT professional, most part of the time I’m engaged on computer related projects. The past few years, my main focus resided on the setup and administration of security infrastructures, including firewalls, authentication tokens, proxies, etc… The installation, configuration and maintenance of intranet portals has also been part of my job.

Back in the late 90’s, my career ramped up with the ascension of Linux as an OS. At the time, I was a system administrator of a company’s workstation network based on HP’s Unix derivate “HP-UX”. Since then, Linux has always accompanied me, for the good and the bad.
